Lawrence Hughes

Lawrence J. Hughes, age 61, passed away peacefully August 25, 2007, at his home surrounded by his devoted family and friends after a valiant battle with cancer. He was born to the union of Eugene and Dorothy Hughes on September 1, 1945. A lifelong resident of Toledo, he attended Libbey High School and graduated from Scott High School. He was an active member of Cornerstone Church. He served as an usher and faithful member for over 15 years. The patriarch of his family (since the death of his father Eugene) he served as an advisor, counselor and sounding board for his family, church members, and many of the young people who learned to rely on his wisdom and mentoring. He was well known and will not be soon forgotten for his "helping hand". Lawrence loved traveling and was an avid fan of Jazz music. He had a deep appreciation for the music. He spent many hours listening to his favorite artists and loved going to various jazz concerts. He shared this passion with his family and friends. Lawrence worked for 34 years with the Sewer Maintenance Department for the City of Toledo. He retired as a Foreman and later returned to work in the same department. He leaves a legacy of generosity and kindness to his wife of ten years Diana L. Hughes; mother, Dorothy Hughes; two sons, Val Jon Hughes and Lawrence Hughes Jr.; one daughter, Ebony (Percy) Gordon of Acworth, GA; five grandchildren; five brothers, Ingram, Jonathon (Pam), Phillip (Margaret), Anthony and Madison Hughes; six sisters, Lana Hughes of Cleveland, OH, Havilland (Keith) Miller of Swanton, OH, Karla (Elder Daniel) Jerkins of Cedar Hill, TX, Rev. Lisa (Bishop John) Tate of Port Huron, MI, Donna (Harvey) Freeman and Vonya Mitchell, a host of aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, other relatives, his Cornerstone Church Family and many, many dear friends. Visitation will be Thursday 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. which will include time for personal remarks by family and friends from 4 p.m. - 6 p.m. at Dale-Riggs Funeral Home Chapel. Wake services Friday 10:00 a.m. followed by funeral services at 11:00 a.m. officiated by Pastor David Banks at Cornerstone Church, interment Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. The family gives special thanks to Steve of Hospice of Northwest Ohio, Flower Hospital - 6th floor staff and the Toledo Hospital 4th - floor staff, for their devoted care.
