Roy O'Dell Moody Obituary - Visitation & Funeral Information

Roy O’Dell Moody, age 84 of Toledo, Ohio passed away peacefully on Thursday, September 26, 2019, surrounded by his loving family at Ebied Hospice in Sylvania, Ohio. Roy was born on November 1, 1934 to John and Ginnie (Applewhite) Moody in St. Louis, Missouri. Roy attended Riddick Elementary School and graduated from Sumner High School. In high school Roy played basketball and attended Metropolitan A.M.E. Church. While living in St. Louis Roy played hardball and was a member of the Black League; he was encouraged by the team to try out for the St. Louis Monarch’s, while traveling for their tryouts he realized he didn’t want to be without the love of his life, Joyce Hendricks who he met and fell in love with in high school. Roy returned home and played hardball with the St. Louis City Park League. Roy worked for the former Norfolk and Southern Railroad before retiring in 1993. Roy was an active member of Braden United Methodist Church and was also an active member of Braden United Methodist Men. He was preceded in death by father John Moody; mother and stepfather Ginnie and Valentine Gross; brother George Edward Rivers and his God Parents Mr. and Mrs. George Young who raised him from a very early age. Roy is survived by his loving wife Mrs. Joyce Moody; daughter Beverly M. Moody Hicks; sons Roy D. (Davina) Moody and Anthony (Natanya) Moody; and Goddaughter Sylvia (Thomas) Gary. Roy is also survived by his 12 grandchildren, 20 great grandchildren, 6 great-great grandchildren; sisters Joan Harris, Pamela Walker and several nieces, nephews other relatives and friends. Visitation will be held at the Braden United Methodist Church on Thursday October 3, 2019 starting at 10:00 a.m. followed by the wake at 11:00 a.m. and services at 12:00 p.m., Pastor Cecil Thompson officiant. Interment services will follow at the Historic Woodlawn Cemetery. Arrangements entrusted to the Dale Riggs Funeral Home.
