In Loving Memory of Sim Strong Byrd, Sr. Sim S. Byrd was born May 15, 1931 in Demopolis, Alabama to the union of Frank Byrd, Sr. and Mattie (Wiggins) Byrd Bonner. He departed this life on Sunday, November 29, 2020 in his home in Toledo, Ohio at the age of 89. He accepted Christ at an early age in Demopolis, Alabama. Sim graduated from U.S. Jones High School, class of 1948-1949. Shortly after, he joined the United States Army. His service included the Korean War Campaign. During that time in the Korean War, while retreating from enemy fire, he received scrap metal injuries to his back and tear gas in his eyes. Sim later fully recovered from his injuries. After being honorably discharged from the Army, he relocated with his family to Toledo, Ohio. He began working several years at a company in Rossford, Ohio before beginning his long career at the U.S. Post office in Toledo, Ohio. While at the post office, Sim served as 010 machine operator, handler, and president of the union. He united in Holy matrimony to Rosie Marie Campbell on Sept. 10, 1955. To this union four children were born. Sim was an active member in several community organizations and singing groups around the city. Some of the groups included “The Glory Bound Harmonizers”, “The Northern Travelers”, “Toledo City Wide Male Chorus”, and several others. He was a faithful lifetime member of Mt. Nebo Baptist Church. Sim was preceded in death by his wife of 53 years Rosie Marie (Campbell) Byrd and daughter Toni Marie (Byrd) Easterly. He was also preceded in death by parents: Frank Byrd, Sr. Mattie (Wiggins) Byrd Bonner, stepfather Isom Bonner, sisters: Louisa Parker, Charlotte Lawson, Rose Byrd, Helen Phillips; and brothers: Frank Jr., Thomas Byrd, and Willie Byrd. He leaves to cherish his memories to daughters: Wanda Ambeau (Bruce), Janet Mcintosh, Jackie Springs (Dennis) Paulette (Byrd) Rasheed, sons: Sims Smith Sr. (Lavondia), Sim Byrd Jr., Tyrone L. Byrd Sr. (Pamela Lynn) sisters: Corine Davis of Toledo, Ohio and Roberta Daniels of Providence, Rhode Island, special friend Betty Watson, 20 grandchildren, 27 great grandchildren, and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and other friends.
