Mattie Mae Gayle Bouyer Rice was born on May 13, 1932 in Atmore, Alabama to Annie Lee Gayle and Wiley Richard Gayle. She was welcomed into her heavenly home on September 6, 2021. She was preceded in death by her parents, husbands, one sister, two sons, and one grandson. Her educational background included: 1949 Graduate of Dunbar High School, Bessemer Alabama; 1956 Graduate of Miles College, Birmingham, Alabama (B.S. Degree, Major: Home Economics, Minor: Social Science). Mrs. Rice relocated to Toledo where she was initially employed as a dietician at Toledo Hospital. Answering the call to become an educator in 1970, she attended Toledo University where she completed courses for her Teacher’s Certification and a Master’s Degree Status for Vocational Education. This afforded her the opportunity to begin her illustrious career in the area of education with the Toledo Public School System. A renowned retired educator from the Toledo Board of Education where she received several honors: Vocational Education Teacher of the year 1982, co-organizer of the first two African American clubs in the Toledo School System, and one of the first African American Instructors to write the curriculum and teach “Black History.” Mrs. Rice was a faithful and devoted member of Mt. Pilgrim Baptist Church and later United Missionary Baptist Church in Toledo, Ohio. She enjoyed not just reading but studying the Word of God. A very loving person who always ended her phone calls with one of the following: “I love you baby.” or “Love you, love you, love you.” The latter was an expression of love regarding the Father, the Son, and the Holy Spirit. She leaves to cherish her loving memory her children Sherry (Rev. Fleming) Thompson, Jr., Wanda (Barry) Thomas, Victor (Shenel) Bouyer, Shawn (Brandy) Bouyer, and Lisa Rice, her loving siblings, grandchildren, great grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and friends. Visitation: 10:00-11:00 am, September 13, 2021, at United Missionary Baptist Church, 2705 Monroe Street, Toledo, Ohio (Reverend Robert G. Bass-Pastor). Funeral service will follow at 11:00 am. Memorial contributions may be made to the United Missionary Baptist Church Scholarship Fund.
