Joyce G. Brown

February 26, 1927 - August 24, 2021

Joyce Brown, born February 27, 1926, passed August 23, 2021 surrounded by her brother and two sisters. Born in Toledo, Ohio, she was the oldest of six children born to Charles Henry Gibson and Corene Porter Gibson. After completing regular studies in grade and high school, she graduated from the first Practical Nursing class and became a nurse at Mercy Hospital. She later earned a B.A. in Elementary Education from Mary Manse College, a Master in Education Media from the University of Toledo and a diploma from the Institute of Children’s Literature. She worked for twenty-five years working at McTigue, Byrnedale, Old West End and Robinson Junior High Schools in Toledo, Ohio. She also taught sixth grade at Martin Elementary School. She was a member of The Church of the New Covenant Baptist of Toledo and participated in many clubs and organizations there. She was a current member of Third Baptist Church where she served actively for more than forty years. Joyce Brown held memberships in Alpha Kappa Alpha Sorority,Inc., National Sorority of Phi Delta Kappa Inc, Phi Delta Kappa Honorary Fraternity, Kappa Delta Pi Society, Ohio Educational Library/Media Association (OELMA), National Alliance of Black School Educators (NABSE), Ohio Retired Teachers Association Life Member, Lucas County Teachers Association as a Life Member. Joyce was preceded in death by her Mother and Father (Charles H. and Corene Gibson), her older brother (Charles H Gibson), her younger sister (Susan Ann Galloway), her niece (Denise Galloway) and great-great niece, Tatum S. Hunt, but she leaves to cherish her memory her brother, Novarro Gibson (Virginia), sisters, Druscilla G. Griffin and Equilla G. Roach, special niece, Darla Burkett (Randy) and a host of other nieces and nephews, grand nieces and grand nephews, loving relatives, precious friends and a cherished church family.
