Dr. Carl L. Armstrong MD
February 24, 2010
Dr. Carl L. Armstrong, retired Captain, United States Army, 81, passed away on Wednesday, February 24, 2010. He was born in Pontiac, Michigan to Coy and Annie Armstrong. As the second oldest of ten children, he recognized that strength was derived from working together which guided his entire life.
Dr. Armstrong was a perfectionist, skilled physician and trailblazer who lovingly dedicated his time and energy to helping others. He trained and mentored many local physicians. His calm demeanor, wit and charm touched thousands of lives. Dr. Armstrong was an assistant professor at The Medical College of Ohio (now UT-COM), a member of the Academy of Medicine's Investment Committee for many years and former President of the Toledo Ob-Gyn Society. During his 44 years of practice, Dr. Armstrong delivered thousands of babies, saw even more patients and performed countless surgeries. One of the highlights of his career was sharing a practice with his son, Anthony, who currently serves as Chief of Staff at Mercy St. Vincent's Medical Center.
He attended Michigan State University for two and a half years after which he gained early admission to the Meharry Medical School (now Vanderbilt) in Nashville, TN. He received further medical training in Chicago, Illinois at Providence Hospital as a staff physician and while serving in the U.S. Army Medical Corps. When choosing his medical specialty of obstetrics/gynecology, Dr. Armstrong was influenced strongly by his close relationship with his Mother, Grandmother and six sisters. Because he enjoyed the companionship of women and wanted a specialty with predominantly positive outcomes, obstetrics and gynecology was an easy choice. He also practiced at Tripler Army Hospital in Honolulu, Hawaii and in Kansas City, Missouri before moving to Toledo to establish his practice and family.
Dr. Armstrong enjoyed many activities, most of which were family oriented. He also enjoyed automobile racing with his brother and sons; flying his airplane with his spouse, relatives and friends; boating at the family cottage and attempting to fix, mostly successfully, anything that was broken. He is a member of the Third Baptist Church and the Alpha Phi Boule and Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternities.
Dr. Armstrong is survived by his wife of thirty eight years, Vernelis, his sons Karl, Dr. Anthony (Myung), Christian, Gregory and Michael; his brothers, Leonard (Doreitha) and Richard (Brenda); sisters, Hazel Cobb, Geraldine Smith, Barbara Campbell (Elmer), Valerie Irwin (Council) and Sharon Holmes, as well as his loving mother-in-law, Pearlean Kinsey. He will also be fondly remembered by his numerous cousins, nephews, nieces, special friends and former patients. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife, Doris, daughter, Pamela., sister, Charlene and brother, Phillip (Jessie).
Family will receive friends from 3:00 PM- 8:00 PM Monday, March 1 at Dale-Riggs Funeral Home located at 572 Nebraska Avenue, Toledo, OH 43604 (419) 248-4254. Web: www.DaleFH.com.

Hortense H. Clemons
January 5, 2010
Hortense H. Clemons passed away January 5, 2010. She was born to the late Edward and Marie (Peoples) Fatio on October 28, 1920 in Brunswick, GA. The Fatio family relocated to Toledo in the mid 1920’s to seek better opportunities. Edward Fatio a Mason, worked as a bricklayer, carpenter, plasterer, mechanic, and eventually was the owner of a small grocery store, Baby Supermarket on Lawrence Avenue. The family was an active part of Warren African Methodist, Episcopal (AME) Church in Toledo, Ohio, the oldest predominately black congregation in Northwest Ohio dedicated in 1871. Growing up in Warren AME Church helped Hortense become a continuous learner with a curious mind and her love of the Church was constant throughout the years. She attended Gunckel Elementary, Robinson Junior High School and graduated from Scott High School in 1938. Always one to better herself, Hortense attended the University of Toledo where she majored in engineering.
Her formal education helped Hortense to develop the ability and imagination to create things; she took classes at the Toledo Museum of Art that gave her the skills to create sculptures. She developed a passion to design ladies hats, which eventually resulted in Hortense being one of the first black women featured in the Jet Magazine for designing and making ladies hats.
On August 28, 1943 she married Frank Charles Clemons, a star athlete at the University of Toledo who later became an officer in the army and awarded a bronze star for combat operations in the Philippine Islands during World War II. Hortense and Frank raised three children (Frank, Fatino, and Edward). During World War II she was employed by the Ford Motor Company as a welder, Rossford Ordnance Depot as a logistics supervisor, and a systems analyst for the Tank Automotive Material Readiness Command in Rock Island, Illinois and Warren Michigan. Her diligent work effort demonstrated her commitment to her work and her family commuting 160 miles a day for a number of years. Hortense retired after 35 years of Federal Service.
Love of church, family, and community served as a source of strength for Hortense throughout the years. She was a member of Warren AME Church for over 70 years where she served as a member of the Trustee Board, Minute Ladies, Lay Organization, Endowment Committee, Church School and member of the Funeral Food Staff. In addition her community activities included volunteering for the Toledo Museum of Art where she ushered and served on the committee of culture diversity, Toledo Day Nursery, Toledo Symphony League, Toledo Opera Guild, the Northwest Ohio West Point Parent Club, and Top Ladies of Distinction. She always without fanfare remembered those who were passed over or less fortunate, by offering a helpful hand or encouraging word.
Hortense had a fond appreciation for fitness and nutrition, she loved to walk, exercise, dance, and travel especially to Europe and South America. This helped her to live a long and full life which was enjoyed by everyone she touched. Hortense was preceded in death by husband Frank C. Clemons of 64 years, grandson, Marc A. Mrs. Doris Bryant
December 27, 2009
OBITUARY
DORIS MAE PEOPLES BRYANT
January 22, 1921 – December 27, 2009
Doris Mae Peoples Bryant was born January 22, 1921 in Toledo, Ohio to Charles H. and Mabel Graham Peoples. Her parents placed her on the cradle roll at Third Baptist Church, where she was baptized at age nine. Doris was involved in many youth church activities and later joined the Voices of Unity, the Sanctuary Choir, the Mission Committee, the Twentieth Century Club, the Historical Committee, the Third Baptist Women’s Council, and was appointed to the American Baptist Women’s Board, where she served as Personal Development Chairperson.
Throughout her teen years, Doris was involved in many projects both at Libbey High School, where she graduated in 1939, and within the community. Doris and several high school friends helped integrate Toledo’s Valentine Theater by demanding that blacks also have access to downstairs seating and not be relegated to a separate balcony area. Their move prompted others in Toledo to become involved in the fight to racially integrate the Valentine Theater.
In 1942, Doris married John H. Bryant, Sr., now deceased. From their union, they had three children – Marguerite, Carolyn, and John Jr. In the children’s early years, Doris worked at Division Market in Toledo. She was active in the PTA at Monroe Elementary School, Robinson Junior High School, Scott High School, and Martin Luther King Elementary School.
Doris was past president of the Women’s Auxilliary of the Toledo chapter of the Postal Alliance; a member of Jack and Jill of America, the La Quincena Club, the Toledo Symphony League, the Thursday Girls, the Working Girls Association, Inc.; served on the Board of Directors of the Linques Neighborhood Center; and worked on charitable drives such as the March of Dimes and the Muscular Dystrophy Association.
For many years, Doris distinguished herself at King Elementary School. A parent aide, she later worked her way into the library. She took a course of study in Library Technology at the University of Toledo, and was given wide latitude in operating the school library. She became known as “The Librarian” by students and teachers. Her storytelling skills are legendary and when she retired, the school placed a plaque bearing her name and years of service on the rocking chair from which she read to the children.
Only a few days before she was hospitalized, Doris Mae Peoples Bryant was honored by the African American Legacy Project in its 2009 Legends Weekend program. Doris was saluted for her work over many decades throughout the Toledo community. Cited for many aspects of her life, the Legacy Project gave special note to her work at King Elementary School.
Doris was a thirty year breast cancer survivor and was involved in work with the American Cancer Society. She loved reading, poetry, crocheting, traveling, tending her plants, storytelling, word puzzles, and listening to classical music. Her mission was to share the wisdom of her years and to encourage others to flourish, even through adversity.
Until the last two months of her life, Doris lived in Toledo, only leaving the city for her hospitalization in Cleveland. On December 27, 2009, she passed away surrounded and embraced by her family.
Doris is survived by daughter Marguerite E. Bibb (Leon D. Bibb); daughter Carolyn O. Bryant; son John H. Bryant, Jr. (Kathleen Bryant); sister Delora M. Atkins; grandchildren, Jennifer R. Clawson (William L. Clawson, Jr.), Alison Bibb Carson (Ronald Carson), John H. Bryant, III, and Tiara M. Bryant; great-grandchildren William L. Clawson, III, Alexa L. Clawson, and Rory M. C. Carson, many nephews, nieces, cousins, and lifelong friends. In addition to her husband John, Doris was preceded in death by her sister Marguerite J. Jacobs, and brother, Charles H. Peoples, Jr. Memorial donations may be made to Third Baptist Church, 402 Pinewood Avenue, Toledo, OH 43604.

Ronald J. Ellis
June 21, 2009
Ronald J. Ellis was born March 23rd, 1947, to the parents of Otis George Ellis and Naomi Juanita Ellis in Toledo, Ohio. Having lived in several great cities, he departed from this life on Father’s Day, June 22nd, 2009.
The third of five individually gifted siblings, Ron was perfectly positioned within a family filled with the rigors and rewards of having hard working parents. Known by many early on as “Ronnie,” he clearly delivered the proper dose of engagement, excitement, and encouragement amongst his siblings.
Ron led an active schedule during his days at Libbey High School that included a position on the basketball team and later as part of Omega Psi Phi at St. Augustine College where he graduated with a Bachelor of Arts degree. From there, he launched a professional career in retail sales and began building a beautiful family.
A member of Braden United Methodist Church, Ron spent most of his life understanding the power of faith, being a servant to others, and participating in ways that would make the least and left out appreciate the joy of being in his company. The gift of conversation.
Two daughters, NaShandra Ellis-Hicks and Lolita (Darryl) Samuel, two sons, Kaz Harris and Torin (Niki) Ellis all of MD, hold dear and live out the passion of their father. Ron embraced seven vibrant grand children, Salathiel, Nadya, Seth, Che, Aislinn, Ryan, and Noah. Also left to cherish his memories: (sister) Elaine of London, (brothers) Fred (Norvella) of CA, Lewis (Luverrain), and Clarence (Arnetta) Ellis, and a host of nieces, nephews other relatives and friends .
If Ron were here, he’d enjoy his brothers, his only sister, his children and their mother, whom we know he loves. If he were here, reading and studying God’s word would be an integral part of his day. If he were here, there would be laughter, a game of chess or pool, and the effort to be less of a stranger to those he didn’t know. So outgoing.
If he were here, he’d thank so many. He’d start with God for all that He had done and end with Dr. Palmer for being a quiet and forceful inspiration after the loss of his father. He’d be bold and continue to pursue that which he believed was meant for he was not one to give up. If he were here we’d most certainly thank him.
Wake service will be 10a.m. Monday followed by funeral service at 11a.m. at Dale-Riggs Funeral Home Chapel Pastor Wynston E. Dixon officiant. Burial Historic Woodlawn Cemetery.

Queen Esther Mcbee
June 8, 2009
Queen Esther McBee, affectionately known as “Queenie” to friends and family, was born to the late Guy and Ella Bennett on September 5, 1925 in Enterprise, Alabama. She was educated in the Dothan Alabama School System and graduated from the “Dothan Colored High School” in 1942 and awarded on May 23, 1946. Later moved to Youngstown, Ohio to further her education and seek new job opportunities. Initially Queen was denied admission to many professional programs because of the social climate of prejudice and racism of the day. However, she was determined to not be denied access to a career goal of nursing.
After moving to Youngstown she pursued education in nursing and later became employed at Maumee Valley Hospital, Riverside Hospital and later at Toledo Hospital where she served as LPN for more than 30 years. Queen received numerous awards, commendations from her employer and personal acknowledgments from patients for her excellent care. While at Toledo Hospital she played on one of the volleyball teams known as “The Jolly Vollies” and was a part of the Diplomat Club. After retirement Queen began working with children at the St. Philips Daycare as a child-monitor; The Loving Tree Daycare and later years she served on the “Granny Program” at Pickett Elementary School where she was loved by all. She loved being around children and working with children.
Queen was united in marriage to Hamilton Clifford McBee on July 25, 1953, to this union was born 4 sons Tyrone, Charles, Mark and Cleveland. Queen enjoyed baking, and making those famous fried pies, fried corn and peach cobbler. She loved working with children and helping everyone. Most of all she enjoyed working with the different church ministries. She enjoyed reading the paper on Sunday evenings, shopping for hats and she had a special love for her dogs Roxy and Jim.
Queen stressed for her children to get an education, as she always said “once you get it no one can ever take it away”. To support her many speeches on education she sacrificed during a time when there was not any money to spare, to purchase the “World Book Encyclopedia” for her children. And with the purchase of that set she proclaimed that there was no excuse for failure or to be uneducated. She continued to remain on the World Book Encyclopedia yearbook renewal since 1960. Queen was an avid believer of letting nothing hold you back. More determined than ever as an adult with children she learned to drive and purchased her own car. She supported her children and grandchildren throughout their various school activities; she also participated in the London Square Neighborhood Block Watch, Senior Center activities.
Queen excepted Christ at an early age and after moving to Toledo united with the Calvary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. J.L. Dotson until the family moved and then she united with the St. Paul Missionary Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. Joseph Smith where she remained a faithful member for 45 years. She was a member of the Matthew Circle Ministry where she served as corresponding secretary; worked with the Kitchen Committee and served on the Clothing Outreach for the needy. She worked with summer Vacation Bible School for many years and was a Mother of the church. Queen was always willing to help where needed with a smile and a joke. Queen enjoyed and loved serving under her present pastor Rev. James Willis, Sr.
On June 8, 2009 she left this earthly body to be eternally present with the Lord. Queen was preceded in death by parents: Guy and Ella Warren Bennett; husband Hamilton C. McBee; brothers: Cleveland “Doc” Bennett and Charles “Ted” Bennett and sisters: Mable Bennett and Eloise Jones.
