Ralph Maddox, Sr. was born February 22, 1922, in Switchback, West Virginia, a coal mining town, and after a 14 year fight with prostate cancer died June 13, 2012, in the Hospice of Northwest Ohio in Toledo. Mr. Maddox was a World War Two veteran who served 4 years of duty as Seaman Second Class in the United States Navy after completing his basic training at the Great Lakes Naval Base in Chicago, Illinois. During his wartime deployments he was stationed at the Charlestown Naval Yard in Boston, Massachusetts and later at the Hingham Naval Air Base in Hingham, Massachusetts where he served on munitions ship missions. After being honorably discharged from the United States naval forces in 1945 in St. Louis, Missouri, Mr. Maddox returned to Toledo, Ohio to work at the U.S. Army military base at Willy's Overland in a post-war peace time civilian capacity. Afterwards he went to work as a line mechanic for over 50 years at Kaiser Jeep and subsequently Daihmler-Chrysler until his retirement in 1989. He was an active and proud member of the UAW-Jeep Division. In addition, Mr. Maddox was a member of the African Methodist Episcopal Church in Pocahontas, Virginia and a long time member of Greater St. Mary's Baptist Church in Toledo, respectively. He too was an outspoken anti-crime civic activist in Toledo's Old West End neighborhood. During his retirement he became a small residential real estate developer. He was the loving son of Mr. Lee Thomas Maddox, Sr. and Mrs. Mary Lou [Graves] Maddox, both natives of Georgia and long time residents of Toledo. He married and was divorced in Toledo from the mother of his nine children, Ms. Cleo Beatrice Ingram-Maddox, also a native of Georgia. They never remarried. Mr. Maddox leaves behind his loving offspring, Khali Maddox-Abdegeo [Ralph Maddox, Jr.]; twins, Ronald and Randall Maddox, Charlotte Maddox, William Marc Maddox, Melinda Maddox, Kim Diane Maddox, Cecelia Maddox, and Carla Renee' Maddox-Johnson. He also leaves a loving son, Timothy Maddox, and a daughter, Paula Maddox-Fearing by another mother. In addition, he leaves his loving elder brother, Lee Thomas Maddox, Jr. a long time Toledo resident. Also, he leaves his grand nephew, Myron Maddox-Duhart. He was the loving uncle of his nephew, Donald Maddox, and his two nieces, Patricia Maddox and Constance Maddox, who preceded him to Glory. They were natives of Toledo. Mr. Maddox leaves also his loving grandchildren, Rachel Maddox, Lonzell Maddox-Johnson, Stephen Maddox- Johnson, and Ngozi Phoebe Cayenne Maddox, Chandra Maddox, Martel Maddox-Hych, and Lenora Maddox. He leaves behind, too, a host of close relatives among the Belchers and the Browns in Cleveland, Ohio and Phoenix, Arizona; the Graves, the Prices and the Shields in Atlanta, Georgia and in West Virginia. Home-Going Services will be Friday with visitation at 6:00 p.m. followed by funeral services at 7:00 p.m. at Dale-Riggs Funeral Home, Senior Pastor Robert Lyons of Greater Saint Mary's Baptist Church will deliver the eulogy, preceded by tributes to the deceased. internment will be private. www.dalefh.com
